Appraisal: This, the first of two pilots to the TV show "Columbo", is itself a remake of the episode "Enough Rope" of the 1960 TV show "The Chevy Mystery Show", written by the same pair of guys. It is well written and pleasant to watch. Some of the tricks Lt. Columbo uses in this film would be imitated later in other films or TV shows (I say this with a great degree of certainty, but cannot point out one specific case in which that happened.) The story is played at a more leisurely pace than the usual episode of the series, and has a greater amount of dialogue, some of which is very interesting.
