The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

Synopsis: Masked man hiding in a theater takes a young singer as protégée.
Appraisal: Although its source material is the apex of modern kitsch, I must admit that the director of this film managed to infuse life into it. He achieved that mainly through the able use of decor, camerawork and editing. Thus the final result rises above the intrinsic conventionality of the text and songs, coming out as a visually compelling spectacle.
