English titles: The Last Train; The Train.
Synopsis: When the Germans invade France in 1940, many people start fleeing their cities. The film centers on a man who leaves his house and city; he is accompanied by his pregnant wife and daughter. They board a train, only they must go in different cars -- first class is for women, children and older people only. He meets a beautiful Jewish woman and falls in love with her. The car he is in gets separated from the one his wife is in. Based on the novel by Georges Simenon, 1st ed. 1961.
Appraisal: To decide whether this film is far-fetched is somewhat beside the point; it is clearly devised with that apparent far-fetchedness in its center. The important fact is, it works fine dramatically, and so it may be considered a success; the ending may have carried the romanticism a little too far though.
