A race driver wants to make a great comeback by taking part at a competition. His car Herbie has a personality and falls in love with another racing car, driven by a woman. Herbie has other problems as well: a pair of thieves hide a stolen diamond in "his" gasoline tank.
I think this is going too far with the joke, but they obviously did not agree, and neither did the paying public. Anyway, it has pace and nice vistas. Its use of special effects is somewhat more subdued this time, but there is a sequence in a tunnel which is impressive enough.
