Minha Namorada (1971)

Maria is an adolescent girl. She has a boyfriend (Fernando) whom she knows since childhood and who is from a well-off family. She meets Pedro, who is from a different state and is in Rio on a scholarship. They fall in love with each other.

Purportedly realistic portrayal of the love-related afflictions and elations of early 1970s youth. The film leaves a lot to be desired in its character depiction, being more than a bit superficial. These young people seem to have nothing to say about anything. And on some occasions the camera adopts a bird's eye view and does not show us what they are saying, e.g., when Maria is breaking up with Fernando. That being said, it's a decent film compared with the average Brazilian productions of that period. And the young actors do a decent job considering they were completely inexperienced. Curiously for a film which advertised itself as "a young film for young people", upon its release its viewing was not allowed for people under 18.
