Second viewing; first viewed on October 31, 1989.
Based on the oratorio composed by Benjamin Britten, with words from traditional Latin texts and poems by Wilfred Owen; it was first performed on May 30, 1962.
The title says it all. The setting is World War I.
I was not so sure about this film on my first viewing, but I can say I am pretty sure now that I do not like it. I am most puzzled by the lack of affinity between the musical style and the visual style. The former's solemnity invites meditation and pause; the latter's collage frenzy invites only fatigue and nervousness.
