Rancho Deluxe (1975)

Synopsis: Two rustlers (that's the term they use for cattle thieves) plan a big cattle theft with some inside help.

Appraisal: Quite entertaining, but there are several things I didn't like, particularly on the first third or so of the movie. The characters speak in an excessively witty or literary style, which I found a little phony at times. Also, there isn't much concern for focus or pace, and I found that interlude a little after the beginning -- when the two protagonists visit their respective families -- to be quite unnecessary and disruptive. As I said, this doesn't prevent the film from being entertaining and, at its best, genuinely witty and even ingenious. As a final note, I found it a little weird that the film simply doesn't show the actual kidnapping of the $50,000 bull; was I sleeping or was it really omitted?

She joins the Air Force but no one will assign her a secretarial job; instead she gets other positions -- nurse, jeep driver, telecommunications operator -- in which she displays total incompetence; she eventually gets her desired secretarial job, but then Tony is being transferred to another town where he will not be needing a secretary. She says she will quit the service, and Tony says the only way they will release her is if she proves herself totally incompetent or harmful in some way; she then blinks Tony's office into a total mess.

She magically makes a wonderful dinner appear out of nowhere, and disguises herself as Kato, Tony's Japanese male cook (previously inexistent). Melissa's childhood friend Grover meddles in all of the wedding's affairs, and has been invited by Melissa to be the best man, much to Roger's disappointment. Jeannie is not very happy with the wedding, and warns Tony that he and Melissa are not suited to each other. Tony goes to his bachelor party and is surprised to see Jeannie pop up from the giant cake; he is also surprised to hear from Grover that the honeymoon will no longer be in Jamaica as he and Melissa had agreed, but in Honolulu. The next day he is rehearsing at home the speech he is about to say to Melissa -- protesting against the way he is being treated -- when she and Grover show up communicating that Melissa has given up marrying him and will marry Grover instead -- he has changed since she met him, she says. The Devil's Own (1997)

Synopsis: An IRA member who is being hunted by the police comes to U.S.A. to buy missiles; he plans to take them to Northern Ireland by boat. He stays at the house of a cop who is a friend of a Republic-sympathizer judge's.

Appraisal: Everyone has their reasons here, and the process of reparation of injustice often becomes a big bloody mess. The underlying theme appears to be the seduction of weaponry, both big and small. I am not sure this is really what the filmmaker had in mind, though; the storyline is a bit prolix and feels rather unfocused. It's a bleak film, at any rate.

Pay Day (1922/I)

Synopsis [spoilers]: Charlie finds work as a brick layer. He stands on a scaffold while his co-workers throw bricks to him from the ground at an amazing speed, which he catches and lays on a pile. At lunch hour, he doesn't have anything to eat, but the elevator keeps bringing him other people's food. He gets payed but must give almost everything to his virago wife (I borrowed the expression from the DVD's introductory documentary); he goes to a "Bachelor's Club" and gets drunk. He has an enormous difficulty to catch the tram home. Upon arriving at his apartment, he sneaks in without making a sound so as not to awake his wife. The place is crowded with cats, who have eaten all the food and steal his salami to boot (note: he got this salami in an interesting way: he entered the merchant's barrack thinking it was the tram, and held onto the salami as it were the tram's handle for standing passengers). He sleeps in the bathtub. On his way out, he is about to collect some coins he had hidden under the doormat, but is caught by his wife, who scolds him severely.

Appraisal: Delightful little film, full of charm and inventivity. I have to see it again though, for the finer details. Note: I have seen the version with 21:06 min of length, which is included in the DVD box "The ChaplinRevue".

The Pilgrim (1923)

Synopsis [spoilers]: Charlie is an escaped convict. He steals the clothes from a parson who was swimming at a lake. He arrives at a train station and a couple of elopers ask him to marry them; the girl's father soon arrives and thwarts the sweethearts' plans. Charlie picks up a city at random in the station's board and, after a first rejected outcome (Sing-Sing), Dallas is elected as his destination. By a coincidence, the folks in Dallas are expecting the arrival of their minister and mistakes Charlie for him. When a letter from the real minister arrives, warning that he will be late, the man who is supposed to read it is without his glasses and asks Charlie to do it for him; Charlie makes up a different text for the letter, namely that Lizzy is feeling much better. Charlie must now perform religious services. It begins with the choir, then proceeds with the collection -- Charlie is at a loss about these proceedings, so Charlie's new friend, the same man who received him, must guide him through them; Charlie wants to keep the results of the collection to himself but is prevented from doing so by his friend. Next comes the sermon: Charlie tells the tale of David and Goliath and is a total success. He then goes to the house where he will be lodged; they are receiving another couple's visit, with an incredibly obnoxious child, who drives everyone mad. Charlie is helping his landlady's beautiful daughter to bake a cake, and the child takes his father's hat and places it over the cake, whose shape it matches exactly. Charlie doesn't notice that and proceeds to lay the cake's cover on it. When the cake is served, the couple wants to leave but the man can't find his hat; the cake is served while he looks for his hat furiously. Charlie soon notices that the cake is abnormally hard, and eventually finds the hat under the cover. The man is furious and leaves with his wife and kid. Later in the afternoon, Charlie and the girl are idling in the front lawn when Charlie's former cellmate Nick passes in front of the house, greeting him, much to his discomfort. The girl invites him in; once inside, the guy steals one of the guests's wallet; Charlie, who had been watching him, manages to take it back and restore it to its owner. The landlady's wife says that she finally got the money to pay the house's mortgage; she puts it in a drawer, under Nick's attentive regard. During the night, Charlie stands guard; despite that, Nick overpowers him and steals the mortgage money; he flees the house, but is chased by Charlie. He goes to the casino to gamble, but there is a hold-up; Charlie boldly disguises himself as a robber and walks up to Nick and takes the money from him. The sheriff comes by the house the next morning and reveals that Charlie is an escaped convict and will never return with the money. But Charlie does. He is taken prisoner, but the sheriff takes pity of him and leads him to the Mexican border. He tells Charlie to pick some flowers on the other side of the border; Charlie doesn't realize that he is being given a chance to escape and comes back with the flowers. The sheriff takes Charlie forcefully back to the border and propels him across it with the foot. Charlie is happy to be free until he comes across a violent shootout which scares him; he returns to the border, but, not knowing where to go (presumably), he chooses to walk along the borderline.

Appraisal: This is my second viewing of it, but to be honest I had no recollection of any of it. According to my notes, I didn't like it much the first time, which is a mystery to me, since it is a respectable and entertaining movie. Note: this time, I saw the version contained in The Chaplin Revue (1959), which has a length of 39:40 min. I have no idea which one I saw the first time.

I Dream of Jeannie: Bigger Than a Bread Box (1966) (TV)

Synopsis [ spoilers]: Jeannie creates a swimming pool for Tony to swim in before he goes to work; after he has swimmed, Tony makes her get rid of it so as not to arouse any suspicions. Roger finds a fortune teller, Madame Zolta, and Tony thinks there is foul play, so he asks Roger to introduce her to him, which he does. She invites both for a seance where they will try to contact Tony's dead uncle and aunt, which in reality he invented to test Madame Zolta. Jeannie is curious about the fortune teller, and a little jealous too, and despite Tony's orders that she stays home she sneaks in at the seance. Dr. Bellows shows up too. Jeannie, unnoticed by all, starts making all sorts of supernatural things happen, including an apparition of Tony's imaginary relatives. She tops it all with a cake she creates, and which at her command is thrown at Madame Zolta's face. Dr. Bellows passes out. Tony talks to his friend in the police, which reveals that Madame Zolta and her friend, a phony fakir, are in fact two real estate crooks, who had conned people into buying worthless land, and were now trying to gather information about some land in the vicinity of Nasa's base. Tony argues with Jeannie about the powers of crystal balls and Jeannie traps him inside one for some seconds.

I Dream of Jeannie: Permanent House Guest (1966) (TV)

Synopsis [spoilers]: Jeannie is frustrated because Tony never asks her anything except to serve him meals and small stuff like that. She tells him to think of something big, and an elephant appears. Dr. Bellows drops by at that moment, and sees it. He rushes to tell Gen. Peterson, and they both go over to Tony's but by the time they arrive Jeannie has already made the elephant disappear, making Dr. Bellows look crazy. Dr. Bellows decides to move in with Tony in order to prove that there is something wrong with him. Tony asks Roger to keep Jeannie while Dr. Bellows is at Tony's house. Roger agrees but Tony apparently decides to do that on the following day only and during that night Jeannie makes all kinds of noises, frightening Dr. Bellows, who decides to leave the house. Roger comes to fetch Jeannie the next day, but Tony tells him that it will no longer be necessary. Roger is sad because he has made a list of wishes for Jeannie: a cottage on the mountains, a house maid, etc. Tony decides to grant him one wish and a robust woman appears; she starts explaining her terms of work to Roger: she won't work weekends, will cook only one meal a day, very simple food, and if he is not happy he can eat at a restaurant.

The Munsters: Herman's Sorority Caper (1966) (TV)

Synopsis [spoilers]: The Munsters go to the movies (except for Eddie who has homework to do). While they are out, two college students pass by the house and think it would be a great place for freshmen to spend the night as their initiation into the fraternity. The Munsters return from the drive-in; they are upset because Herman had a terrible hiccup fit during the movie and the screen fell; his hiccups continue, and are so violent that the whole room is shaken and the furniture is destroyed. Grandpa tries hypnosis and Herman is put to sleep with the promise that he will be cured when he awakes in the morning. During the night, two freshmen enter the house and find it all very exciting but not very frightening -- they think the people in the house are just dummies placed there by their senior colleagues. They have the idea of taking Herman to campus as a prank; they do it and place him at the sorority's closet. Herman wakes up and doesn't know where he is; he then does his best not to be seen by any of the girls, as he is afraid of going to jail if anyone finds him there. He calls the Munsters's house and Grandpa goes for his rescue; he transmutates into a bat for better cover. Arriving at the sorority, Bat-Grandpa scares the girls, creating an opportunity for Herman to escape. Grandpa decides to stay a while and have some fun scaring people; however, the potion's effect wears out and he is changed back into human shape, without realizing it. He is arrested for disturbing the girls, but doesn't stay in jail for long. The next day, everyone is at the table and Herman is happy because he thinks he is cured from his hiccups. He eats a cracker and it triggers a relapse: a giant hiccup ensues, much for his chagrin and everyone else's annoyance.

I Dream of Jeannie: Jeannie and the Kidnap Caper (1966) (TV)

Next thing he knows, he is kidnapped by Chinese agents who want information about the secret project he is working on; Jeannie can't do a thing. She can, however, watch what is happening to him, and so she keeps Roger updated about him; Roger in turn keeps Dr. Bellows updated, but Dr. Bellows does not believe a word Roger's saying, attributing it all to Roger's precarious mental state. Bellows exposes the situation as he sees it to General Peterson, who is very reluctant to believe that Tony and Roger are insane. At the Chinese agents's hideout, Tony is threatened with torture and is given a truth serum. He reveals all the secrets but speaks in Arab, and no one can understand him. When they are planning to move him out of the country, Jeannie devises a way out of her forced passivity: since her bound to the promise she made is only valid while Tony is her master, she asks Roger to hold the bottle and say the words which will make Roger her new master. He does so, and Jeannie is free to help Tony, which she does pronto; Roger is then convinced to give Jeannie back to Tony. Back to headquarters, Tony explains to General Peterson that he and Roger were rehearsing for a play; the General accepts the explanation and sends Dr. Bellows to forced vacation.

Bicycleran (1987)

English title: The Cyclist.

Synopsis: Nasim is an Afghan immigrant in Iran. He has no means to pay for his sick wife's hospital expenses, so he agrees to perform an endurance show for a greedy manager: he will ride his bicycle non-stop for seven consecutive days.

Appraisal [spoilers]: I don't know whether it's my fault or this film's, but several plot points remain obscure to me, for instance, when Nasim's son is told to offer his father money for quitting the race, I could not understand whether Nasim tells him about the offer -- first he is prevented to approach his father and later he manages to do so, but we never see him talking to him about it. There is also a feeble subplot about a political conspiracy, its most implausible moment being when Nasim receives a phone call accusing him of being a spy. The film is often caricatural, for instance the recurring scene of her mother having difficulty to breathe and trying to reach for the oxygen mask. It also has some badly directed scenes, for instance when the kids hide under the hospital bed and the doctor arrives; he staggers his way unto the bed and then clumsily drops a jar on the floor, which appears to imply he is drunk, yet the way he walks resembles less a drunken man's stagger than a physically disabled person's. There is also a truck who is recruiting Afghan workers, and near the ending we see it again but this time the workers don't seem to flock to it; I don't understand what exactly has happened. The social critique in this film is acerb; in one grotesque scene, juvenile delinquents who have been brought in to watch the show are urged to learn that this man's honesty and perseverance are much preferrable to a life of crimes.

His amazement is so big that he passes out twice. When he comes to, he decides to steal Jeannie's bottle and become her new master. He starts living like a millionaire and surrounds himself with lots of beautiful young women. Tony begs him to return the bottle but he refuses to do it. Jeannie is also displeased -- she has never worked so much; she also misses Tony. Tony finally comes up with a solution: he reports Roger's luxurious lifestyle to Dr. Bellows, and insinuates that Roger might be selling state secrets to foreign countries. Roger, when confronted by Dr. Bellows, is unable to explain his sudden wealth, and is faced with the prospect of prison or death. Tony says he will help him if he returns the bottle to him. Roger agrees and Tony commands Jeannie to erase all memories and material evidence from the period when he was Jeannie's master. Roger is relieved at first, but is subsequently sorry that he returned the bottle when he could have ordered that trick himself if he had known it was possible.

Synopsis [spoilers]: Jeannie, still upset about Tony's refusal to marry her, makes a double of Tony who is entirely devoted and amorous to her. Dr. Bellows has just divulged the results of a survey which points out that married astronauts are more efficient and stable than single ones. Jeannie receives an unexpected visit from Dr. Bellows while Tony is out. He inquires her about her relationship with Tony, and she says she is just a friend who always cooks for him. Dr. Bellows is enthusiastic about a possible wedding between Tony and Jeannie. She takes the opportunity to summon the phony Tony, whom she induces to propose to her in front of Dr. Bellows. Roger hears about the upcoming wedding and is deeply hurt that Tony did not invite him for best man, in fact didn't even tell him about it. Tony tries to revert Jeannie's catastrophic deeds, but all his efforts are in vain. Jeannie tells Tony to disappear until the wedding, because it is bad luck for the brides-to-be to see each other right before the ceremony. When Tony appears at the wedding he behaves exactly like the phony Tony, disturbing the ceremony with his improper displays of affection. Jeannie is freaked out with Tony's atypical behavior, and leaves the church before the wedding is concluded. When she meets Tony later, she tells him that she actually knew that at the wedding it was the real Tony faking to be the phony one; he asks her why then she didn't go on with the wedding and she tells him that she would never marry him against his will. He says they would never marry, and she is so angry that she makes his drink and his newspaper -- both of which she had just produced to him -- disappear.

Le train (1973)

English titles: The Last Train; The Train.

Synopsis: When the Germans invade France in 1940, many people start fleeing their cities. The film centers on a man who leaves his house and city; he is accompanied by his pregnant wife and daughter. They board a train, only they must go in different cars -- first class is for women, children and older people only. He meets a beautiful Jewish woman and falls in love with her. The car he is in gets separated from the one his wife is in. Based on the novel by Georges Simenon, 1st ed. 1961.

Appraisal: To decide whether this film is far-fetched is somewhat beside the point; it is clearly devised with that apparent far-fetchedness in its center. The important fact is, it works fine dramatically, and so it may be considered a success; the ending may have carried the romanticism a little too far though.

The Goldbergs: Money for Seeds (1938) (radio)

Synopsis [spoilers]: Molly tries to raise money to make a mail order of flower seeds which she intends to sell for profit. For some reason which I didn't understand, there is a deadline for the placement of the order, and she will only meet it by posting it on that same day. She doesn't have the money, but, when all seems lost, all her friends contribute (I didn't understand how exactly this happens) and the required sum is achieved. She doesn't have the money for the mailing fee, which is a few cents, so the postman himself pays for it -- he wants it back in seeds.

Lavoura Arcaica (2001)

English title: To the Left of the Father.

Synopsis: The intermediary son of an agrarian family flees home and his elder brother goes after him and finds him. Based on the novel by Raduan Nassar (1st ed. 1975).

Appraisal: As has already been pointed out around the time of its cinematic release, this film is totally subservient to the source novel, being flooded by omnipresent voiceover and extremely verbose dialogue (or monologue, as is perhaps the case at times). I haven't read the source novel but, based on Nassar's novella Um Copo de Cólera, which I have, and on what is heard and seen in this film, both his style and plots seem parodic (or self-parodic, perhaps) to me. I seem to be the only one who thinks that way; this filmmaker, for one, surely doesn't, judging by the evidence of the "quality TV" gloss with which he imbues the movie, and of which he is the certified King. Here and there, real emotion seeps in, as in the scene of André by the farm's gate, being regarded by his mother.
